Sen. Cruz: The Janet Reno DOJ said the assault weapons ban was useless

Comments Off on Sen. Cruz: The Janet Reno DOJ said the assault weapons ban was useless

A study done by the Justice Department in 1999 analyzed the 1994 “Assault Weapons” ban and concluded it did nothing to reduce crime or shootings. The Justice Department stated, “The ban has failed to reduce the average number of victims per gun-murder incident or multiple-gunshot wound victims.”

Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, criticized the Senate Democrats’ proposed assault weapons ban as a prohibition against “scary looking guns,” one that even the Justice Department (DOJ) has acknowledged does not limit gun violence.

“The proposed assault weapons ban is a singularly ineffective piece of legislation,” Cruz recalled, during a Senate Judiciary Committee Hearing  on gun violence today, a 1994 judgement from the DOJ. “That was the Janet Reno Department of Justice under President Clinton that said that the assault weapons ban was singularly ineffective. Under it, there has bee no discernible reduction in the lethality and injuriousness of gun violence.”

Leahy, Reid distancing themselves from assault-weapons ban

Comments Off on Leahy, Reid distancing themselves from assault-weapons ban

Yesterday, the Washington Post noted how badly Dianne Feinstein’s assault-weapons ban was faring on Capitol Hill.  Today, it’s NBC’s turn.  Chuck Todd reported earlier this morning that even Patrick Leahy won’t support the bill (via the Weekly Standard):

The Hill reiterates that Reid won’t give it any public support, either.  He will only pledge to support legislation that “generally” addresses gun violence:

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) on Tuesday declined to voice support for Democratic legislation that would ban assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition clips.

Reid said he would bring gun-violence legislation to the floor and open it to a lengthy amendment process. But he declined to endorse the assault weapons ban introduced last week by Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), which has the support of the 2nd- and 3rd-ranking Senate Democratic leaders. …

He said he has told his colleagues he will do everything in his power to “bring legislation dealing with guns and violence, generally, to the floor.”

No one thought Reid would be excited to support a new assault-weapons ban.  He didn’t support the last one, and he’s been non-committal over the last several weeks even while his fellow Democrats have publicly demanded a new ban.  Leahy’s reluctance should probably not be surprising, either; Vermont has a lot of gun owners, and voters there support nearly unrestricted gun rights.

Former Playboy CEO Blames Global Warming for Chicago’s Murder Rate

Comments Off on Former Playboy CEO Blames Global Warming for Chicago’s Murder Rate

Even if crime does intensify in seasonally warmer months, climate change is something that happens across the board, and one of the latest studies estimates that the earth’s surface temperature has warmed up approximately 0.28 degrees Fahrenheit in over 20 years — violent crime across the United States has been falling for decades now.

Christie Hefner, former CEO of Playboy and an associate of the Center for American Progress, made this outlandish claim on Morning Joe today: “Last year we hit a record number of murders from guns, and this year we’re already outpacing last year’s number. Now, there are contributing factors that are not under anybody’s control, it may seem odd, but it’s factually true, one of them is actually the weather. There is a dramatic increase in gun violence when it is warmer, and we are having this climate change effect that is driving that.”

Obama Administration Takes Steps to Implement Obamacare Mandate Tax on Americans

Comments Off on Obama Administration Takes Steps to Implement Obamacare Mandate Tax on Americans

The Obama Administration took steps this week to implement the Obamacare mandate tax. The Congressional Budget Office determined in 2012 that millions of Americans will get socked by the Obamacare mandate tax, 80 percent of whom are middle income citizens.
The Hill reported:

The Obama administration took new steps Wednesday toward implementing the individual mandate in its signature healthcare law, downplaying the scope of the unpopular provision by stressing rules that allow exemptions from the requirement to purchase insurance.

The Internal Revenue Service and the Health and Human Services Department emphasized exceptions to the mandate, which were detailed in new regulations that also laid out the process by which the IRS will calculate penalties for going uninsured.

The mandate requires most taxpayers to either buy insurance or pay a fine to the IRS. It’s one of the most politically unpopular provisions of the healthcare law, and was at the core of last year’s historic Supreme Court case over the healthcare law.

HHS referred to the politically charged provision as a system of “shared responsibility” payments.

The mandate penalty “applies only to the limited group of taxpayers who choose to spend a substantial period of time without coverage despite having ready access to affordable coverage,” HHS said in a fact sheet on the new rules. The ‘40 Percent’ Myth of guns are purchased without a background check

Comments Off on The ‘40 Percent’ Myth of guns are purchased without a background check

Gun-control advocates have recently been throwing around an impressive new number. President Obama used it last Wednesday, claiming: “as many as 40 percent of guns are purchased without a background check.” Vice President Biden and everyone from the New York Times to the Wall Street Journal to USA Today repeatedly use it. That “fact” provided the principal support for his first announced gun-control proposal, “universal background checks.” But unless you include family inheritances and gifts as “purchases,” it is simply false.

The Brady Act background checks currently prevent someone who buys from a federally licensed dealer from buying a gun if he has a felony, or in many cases a misdemeanor conviction, or has been involuntarily committed for mental illness. Prior to Brady, federal law merely required that people sign a statement stating that they did not have a criminal record or a history of mental problems under threat of perjury. Obama’s 40 percent claim makes it look like a lot of gun buyers are avoiding these checks.

Actually, the number reported was a bit lower, 36 percent, and as we will see the true number of guns “sold” without check is closer to 10 percent. More important, the number comes from a 251-person survey on gun sales two decades ago, early in the Clinton administration. More than three-quarters of the survey covered sales before the Brady Act instituted mandatory federal background checks on February 28, 1994. In addition, guns are not sold in the same way today that they were sold two decades ago.

The number of federally licensed firearms dealers (FFLs) today is only a fraction of what it was. Today there are only 118,000; while back in 1993 there were over 283,000. Smaller dealers, many operating out of their homes, were forced out by various means, including much higher costs for licenses.

The survey asked buyers if they thought they were buying from a licensed firearms dealer. While all FFLs do background checks, those perceived as being FFLs were the only ones counted. Yet, there is much evidence that survey respondents who went to the very smallest FFLs, especially the “kitchen table” types, had no inkling that the dealer was actually “licensed.” Many buyers seemed to think that only “brick and mortar” stores were licensed dealers, and thus reported not buying from an FFL when in fact they did.

But the high figure comes primarily from including such transactions as inheritances or gifts from family members. Putting aside these various biases, if you look at guns that were bought, traded, borrowed, rented, issued as a requirement of the job, or won through raffles, 85 percent went through FFLs; just 15 percent were transferred without a background check.

If you include these transfers either through FFLs or from family members, the remaining transfers falls to 11.5 percent.

We don’t know the precise number today, but it is hard to believe that it is above single digits.

China plans economic colonization with “development zones” in US

Comments Off on China plans economic colonization with “development zones” in US

US-communist-chinaCould real estate on American soil owned by China be set up as “development zones” in which the communist nation could establish Chinese-owned businesses and bring in its citizens to the U.S. to work?

That’s part of an evolving proposal Beijing has been developing quietly since 2009 to convert more than $1 trillion of U.S debt it owns into equity. . . .

The Obama administration, under the plan, would grant a financial guarantee as an inducement for China to convert U.S. debt into Chinese direct equity investment. China would take ownership of successful U.S. corporations, potentially profitable infrastructure projects and high-value U.S. real estate. . . .

“The basic idea is to turn Asian savings, China’s in particular, into real business interests rather than let them be used to support U.S. over-consumption,” Yu Qiao [professor of economics in the School of Public Policy and Management at Tsighua University in Beijing] wrote, reflecting themes commonly suggested by Chinese government officials. “While fixed-income securities are vulnerable to any fall in the value of the dollar, equity claims on sound corporations and infrastructure projects are at less risk from a currency default,” he continued.

The blog “The Economic Collapse” notes that the Chinese government has already successfully done this in China and Nigeria:

Initially, these “special economic zones” were only established within China, but now the Chinese government has been buying huge tracts of land in foreign countries such as Nigeria and establishing special economic zones in those nations.  So could such a thing actually happen in America?

Fort Collins students read Pledge of Allegiance in Arabic

Comments Off on Fort Collins students read Pledge of Allegiance in Arabic

A Fort Collins principal stands by his decision to allow students from a multicultural group to recite the Pledge of Allegiance in Arabic on the school’s intercom.

“We do say the Pledge of Allegiance on Mondays at Rocky Mountain High School,” principal Tom Lopez said.

Students have always said it in English. This year, a group with about 30 students approached Lopez with a request to translate and recite the pledge in other languages.

“They had to go through me for approval, and I reviewed it pretty carefully,” Lopez said.

First, the students translated the Pledge of Allegiance and read it in French. Then they recited the pledge in Spanish last fall. Monday, students read the pledge in Arabic.

“We have a tremendous amount of diversity in our school,” Lopez said. “This is very American, not un-American.”

The response has been mostly positive, said Lopez, though the calls and emails from upset parents have been very negative.

“I guess I’m getting worn down a little bit by how intense their sense of hate has been represented in some of the things they’ve written and said,” Lopez said on Tuesday.

Lopez says Rocky Mountain High School is a place of inclusion.

“When they pledge allegiance to United States, that’s exactly what they’re saying — they’re just using another language as their vehicle,” Lopez said.

He says it’s likely the group will have other opportunities to recite the pledge in other languages, though he concedes it’s a wise idea to recite the pledge in English that day as well.
