Tennessee Gov. Haslam says emergency exchange rules not intended as ‘stumbling block’

Republican Gov. Bill Haslam said today the state’s new emergency rules requiring background checks for people giving advice to consumers about Tennessee’s new federally run health insurance marketplace aren’t aimed at hindering the program.

“It’s certainly not intended to be a stumbling block,” the governor told reporters today.

He said that while he did not support President Barack Obama’s Affordable Care Act, which created the exhanges that crank up on Tuesday, he wants them to succeed.

“I do,” Haslam told reporters. “The Affordable Care Act is the law of the land right now and whether I agree with it or not doesn’t matter. In our case, the federal government is going to be running the exchange. … But certainly if it’s in place we want it to work well.”

Haslam’s comments come as his administration prepares to go to court later this afternoon to defend itself from a lawsuit on the background checks for health exchange “navigators.”

‘Government Shut Down’ Won’t Actually Shut Down Government

Comments Off on ‘Government Shut Down’ Won’t Actually Shut Down Government

It turns out that the ominous “government shut down” isn’t so apocalyptic after all since it won’t actually shut down government because the vast majority of federal services and activity will continue as normal.

Image: Capitol Hill from the Washington Monument.

In addition, the same thing has happened – without dire consequences – no less than 17 times over the past three decades.

The dispute over Obamacare means it is “99.9%” certain that the US government will “shut down” on October 1st because lawmakers have failed to pass legislation that will authorize the government to spend money to fund its operations from the beginning of the new fiscal year.

However, as the Washington Post highlights, the same “shut down” has occurred 17 times since 1977. Most of the previous shut downs lasted from a few hours to a few days. The longest ran for 21 days from December ’96 to January ’97 during the presidency of Bill Clinton.

Obama supporters and Democrats have attempted to portray a potential government shut down as something approaching a doomsday scenario, most notably Democratic Senator Tom Harkin, who hyped the prospect of it “as dangerous as the breakup of the Union before the Civil War.”

In reality, key functions of the government will continue to operate as before even in the event of a “shut down”.

– Federal air traffic controllers will continue to monitor take offs and landings;

– The TSA will still be screening passengers in US airports;

– The US military will stay on duty and many credit unions and banks will cover their Oct. 15 paychecks if they are delayed;

– Embassies and consulates overseas will continue to provide services to American citizens;

– The mail will continue to be delivered;

– Federal courts will continue to operate;

– The US Supreme Court will continue to operate as normal when it resumes on October 7;

– Taxes will continue to be collected;

– Sales taxes will continue to be collected

– Garbage will continue to be collected;

– Visa services for people traveling to the United States will continue to operate;

– US passport applications will continue to be processed normally;

– Green card applications will continue to be processed normally;

– Social Security and Medicare benefits will continue to operate normally;

– The vast majority of Homeland Security employees will stay on the job;

– The vast majority of Coast Guard employees will stay on the job;

– The vast majority of Border Patrol agents will stay on the job;

– The vast majority of Secret Service personnel and other law enforcement agents and officers will stay on the job;

– Schools will stay open;

– The National Weather Service and the National Hurricane Center will continue to issue natural disaster warnings and track storms;

– The Mars Rover will continue to explore the red planet and the International Space Station will continue to operate;

– The District of Columbia passed a $144m contingency fund on Friday to ensure all its services would continue to operate normally;

– Most services managed by the Department of Veterans Affairs will continue.

The most damaging consequence of a government shut down will be that non-essential federal employees will be furloughed (given temporary unpaid leave) and see their paychecks delayed. That’s a bummer if you work for the government, but it’s hardly a doomsday scenario.

In addition, previous “government shut downs” have not caused any kind of sustained panic in the financial markets.

As Ron Paul writes today, “Despite all the hand-wringing heard in DC, a short-term government shut down (which doesn’t actually shut down the government) will not cause the country to collapse.”

Reid Tables Bill to Fund Government, Refuses to Come to Table with Republicans

WASHINGTON, DC — U.S. Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) released the following statement regarding Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s decision to block consideration of the House-passed Continuing Resolution to avoid a government shutdown.

“Democratic Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid had the opportunity this afternoon to avert a government shutdown. Instead, he chose to kill the House’s bill to keep government open, a deliberate act to move towards a government shutdown. This is no surprise. After the House acted Saturday night, Sen. Reid refused to call the Senate back to service, instead leaving senators at home on vacation while a shutdown loomed. And he has apparently advised the President not to meet with House and Senate leaders of both parties. Harry Reid wants a shutdown, because, sadly, Democrats are putting politics above the needs of the American people. The New York Times explained why: because, as the Democrats believe “now is the time to break the power of Tea Party Republicans.”

“This is exactly the kind of DC-based thinking that makes Americans disdain Washington, DC. Democrats need to listen to the people and start working for the millions of Americans who are losing their jobs, wages, and healthcare benefits because of Obamacare. This is not a debate over a government shutdown; it’s a debate about how Obamacare is plaguing our economy. I will continue working to make sure the government stays open and Americans receive the same benefits as giant corporations and Congress under Obamacare. Until then, I hope the American people will continue to speak out against this disastrous, train wreck of a law and make DC listen.”

Lamar Alexander Blocks Tea Party Voters From Communicating With Him

US Senator Lamar Alexander (R-TN) is facing increased pressure from the tea party. Alexander has been named “Liberal Lamar” from many in the state and his challenger, state rep. Joe Car, is capitalizing on that title.

It was already exposed that Alexander tried to purchase more than 20k Twitter followers a couple months ago because he lacked support. Individuals were furious when they realized that they were somehow now supporters of the liberal republican. Alexander dumped the load of new “supporters” before too many noticed.

If you visit Alexander’s campaign Facebook page you will see more criticism than support. In fact, less than 10% of those who comment on Alexander’s posts are supportive of the senator. However, his critics are not democrats. In fact, Alexander’s critics are tea party, libertarian leaning, constitutional republicans.

Tens of thousands of republican voting Tennesseans have voiced their concerns with the senator on his Facebook page. However, Alexander doesn’t want to hear it. Rather than listen to his constituents, Alexander simply blocks them from commenting. In an attempt to deceive voters, Alexander has blocked tea party critics from commenting on his Facebook page so only comments of supporters are visible to the public.

Sam Hatt, a self-described constitutional conservative and Sparta,Tennessee resident , tells us that Alexander blocked him shortly after Representative Carr announced he would challenge him for the Senate seat. “I asked Alexander how many pieces of silver Washington was paying him to vote liberal. I was no longer allowed to comment or contact the Senator,” says Hatt.

Phil Dedrick, another self-described constitutional conservative and legislative activist living in Waynesborro,Tennessee, has voted for Alexander every time he has run for office since 1978. “Things are different now,” says Dedrick. ”He votes Liberal and we Tennesseans sent him to DC to vote as a conservative, and only as a conservative. If Lamar is going to vote the way he has been, then he should run as a Democrat.”

Dedrick was blocked after posting Lamar’s voting record on a post where the senator had lied to voters about his vote. “I was simply trying to show voters the truth,” says Dedrick.

NBC News announced Friday that it will present a special series of programs and reports next week intended to “help Americans get the most out of the Affordable Care Act,” according to a press release.

Timed to coincide with the rollout of new insurance exchanges, “Ready or Not, the New Healthcare Law” begins airing Monday, Sept. 30. The series will appear on such network mainstays as “NBC Nightly News” and “Today,” as well as on social media and other digital outlets.

The programs will provide interactive tools “to help shed light on what the healthcare act means for [consumers] and explain how to enroll” in the new marketplaces opening on Oct. 1, according to the statement. Additionally, the series will include reporting on the Obama administration’s messaging, primary-care physician shortages, changes to emergency rooms and other topics related to the law’s rollout.

Also on Monday, a new poll that details public opinion and awareness about the law will be released. In addition, “NBC Nightly News” will air an interview with Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, who has long been at the forefront of managing and selling the ACA to the public.

Dr. Nancy Snyderman, NBC’s chief medical correspondent, will figure centrally in the programming. “The sweeping federal law is confusing,” she said in the press release. “We will clarify parts of the law, explain how states differ and tackle many of the challenges associated with it. We are committed to answering questions and serving as a guide as this legislation is implemented.”

NBC News did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Well Snopes is now saying this is a false story as of 3 hours

President Barack Obama held a press conference to announce that he is declaring the month of November ‘National Muslim Appreciation Month’.

“The Muslim community deserves our full acceptance and respect,” Obama told reporters. “We have killed millions of Muslims overseas since the September 11th attacks. They are not all bad. In fact most of them are good. So from now on, November will be a month to celebrate the Muslim community, the Sunnah and the Quran.”

Khaled Matei who is a member of the Muslim Brotherhood‘s Freedom and Justice Party told CNN he is pleased with Obama and his actions. “I spoke with President Obama by telephone yesterday and personally thanked him for what he is doing for the Muslim community,” Matei said. “This is definitely a step in the right direction I explained to him. Praise Allah.”

Obama informed reporters about his future plans for helping Muslims around the world. “I will be working with Congress in making it easier for Muslims to earn a Green Card and achieve American citizenship,” Obama said. “Currently as it stands, obtaining a Visa or Green Card for a Muslim is very difficult. There are too many background checks in place and I plan to fix that.” Obama continued, “Muslims are hardworking people who are just looking to live the American Dream like the rest of us. Mr. Matei of the Muslim Brotherhood assured me they want to come to this country to help us, not harm us.”

Obama finished the press conference by explaining to reporters how happy he is with America. “Folks, there is no way we could have had a ‘National Muslim Appreciation Month’ 20 years ago. That really says a lot about the growth and progress of this great country.”

‘National Muslim Appreciation Month’ begins November 1st and will end at midnight on November 30th. For any questions or comments please contact the 24-hour National Muslim Appreciation Hotline at (785) 273-0325.

Capping a dramatic and chaotic week on Capitol Hill, the Senate on Friday approved a critical budget bill that would fund the government past Sept. 30 — but only after Democrats succeeded in stripping a Republican-backed provision to defund ObamaCare.

The final vote was 54-44.

The bill now returns to the House, and is seen by some lawmakers as a sort of legislative hot potato. If the two chambers cannot agree on a final bill by midnight on Monday, then the government will shut down. Neither side wants to be left holding the bill if that happens.

House Republicans are under heavy pressure, now, from fellow conservatives to stand by their demand that ObamaCare be defunded, or least delayed.

House Speaker John Boehner already indicated that he will not accept the Senate-passed bill in its current form. The House is expected to take up the legislation starting on Saturday.

Earlier Friday, Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid narrowly won approval to restore funding for ObamaCare. The 54-44 vote fell along party lines.

That was after the Senate voted 79-19 on the initial version of the bill, which in its original form would keep the government open while defunding ObamaCare. Several Republicans joined Democrats in voting “yes” on that vote, ignoring appeals by Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, and other conservatives to stall the vote.
