Tennessee congressman ridicules culture of guns and Bibles

The U.S. Senate can’t pass more gun control legislation because too many people value guns and Bibles — at least according to U.S. Rep. Steve Cohen, D-Memphis, who said it’s a political, and possibly, cultural problem.

Cohen said as much on MSNBC Wednesday.

Tennessee Watchdog contacted Cohen’s office Thursday hoping to ask his spokesman Ben Garmissa, what, specifically, is wrong with a person who appreciates guns and Bibles?

Better yet, are people who value guns and Bibles really the cause of so much violence in America?

Unfortunately, Garmissa did not respond to our two messages.

On the MSNBC program, Cohen lamented that Senate Democrats, and even certain Republicans, can’t dare support gun control measures for fear that voters will retaliate.

So, there you have it. One of Tennessee’s two Democrats in Congress thinks you’re the problem with America if you value your Bible. Meanwhile, the other Democrat congressman from Tennessee, Nashville’s Rep. Jim Cooper, walked out of a congressional hearing today on Benghazi just before the parents of the dead American heroes were to testify. Almost the entire Democratic membership of the committee walked out together, a move calculated to show disrespect. That’s your Tennessee Democrats.

He also spoke of how he angered residents in his own state after posting a highly inflammatory cartoon on Twitter blaming the National Rifle Association for this week’s Naval Yard shooting massacre in Washington, D.C. “They are hard core Republicans, and this means more to them. I think their guns are right there next to their Bibles. I’m not sure which they find more important to them.”

U.S. Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.), chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, revealed that Democrats excused themselves from a Thursday hearing on Benghazi before the family members of the slain American heroes testified.

It is unclear why Democrats were not interested in hearing what Patricia Smith, the mother of slain information management officer Sean Smith, and Charles Woods, the father of former Navy SEAL Tyrone Woods, had to say.

Issa tweeted a photo on Thursday showing the empty side of the room where Democrats are normally seated. The only Democrats who stuck around were Ranking Member Elijah Cummings and Rep. Jackie Speier (D-Calif.).

Chaffetz: Unacceptable Al Jazeera Got Benghazi Report Before Congress

Comments Off on Chaffetz: Unacceptable Al Jazeera Got Benghazi Report Before Congress

Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-UT) blasted the chairman of an investigative panel on the Benghazi attacks for allowing its report to be leaked to Al Jazeera America before Congress even obtained copies of it.
At a Thursday House Oversight and Government Reform hearing on Benghazi, Chaffetz asked Mark Sullivan, the chairman of the Independent Panel of Best Practices, how lawmakers in Congress could have learned about the report on Al Jazeera.

The report found that the State Department knew of security problems in Benghazi and failed to do anything about it. Chaffetz said Congressmen still do not have the report while Al Jazeera America has had it for a month.

“One of my fundamental challenges and problems is the United States Congress doesn’t have this report. It’s been almost a month. We don’t have this report,” Chaffetz said. “And yet the first time it comes out is on Al Jazeera? That’s where we gotta get this stuff?”

Sullivan said the State Department finally has the report, which was finished on August 13, but Al Jazeera obtained it even before the State Department. Chaffetz said that Sullivan and Todd Keil, who was Sullivan’s deputy on the panel, were testifying because lawmakers found out about their panel’s report on Al Jazeera.

Chaffetz insisted Sullivan needed to get to the bottom of how the leak occurred.

“I think that was really unfortunate,” Sullivan said. “The State Department didn’t have a chance to look at that [Al Jazeera America] report before it came out.”

Chaffetz reiterated that Congress still needed copies of the report.

“For Al Jazeera to have a copy it a month almost before us is not acceptable,” Chaffetz said. “We have to get a copy of this.”

Exclusive: Common Core Paying Off Republican Politicians?

Comments Off on Exclusive: Common Core Paying Off Republican Politicians?

Tennessee recently made national headlines for a single city spending $5.2 million to align with the standards of Common Core.

“The new Common Core standards being implemented in states around the country are bringing unforeseen expenses to local districts, like a Tennessee city that had to borrow $5.2 million to buy iPads and laptops for kids as young as kindergarten,” reports Fox News.

The Murfreesboro, TN city council just recently approved the bond issuance last Thursday with a unanimous vote.

So, who exactly is pushing Common Core in the state of Tennessee? Perhaps one of the largest groups lobbying for Common Core in the state is the Ayers Foundation. Jim and Janet Ayers, founders of the organization, are extremely active in Tennessee politics. The Ayers Foundation is in many ways a political think tank. In 2012 the foundation was given a $1.2 million grant to push Common Core standards into the state of Tennessee. If Common Core is successfully implemented in Tennessee, the Ayers foundation is sure to prosper even more.

Emails were recently discovered that show Janet Ayers lobbying the Tennessee state legislature to accept and institute Common Core in the state of Tennessee (pictured below).

GOP ties Obamacare to government shutdown

Comments Off on GOP ties Obamacare to government shutdown

It’s my understanding if Obama shuts down the gov’t over defunding Obamacare it is him that did the shut down, not the Republicans, because defunding Obamacare or anything else doesn’t mean you have to shut down the gov’t. You simply just didn’t fund a certain thing and funded everything else.

House GOP leaders announced their intention Wednesday to pass a bill this week that would only keep the government running after September 30 if President Barack Obama’s health care reform law is fully defunded.

The decision sets up a high stakes game of political chicken over the next 12 days, as Democrats have repeatedly rejected any attempt to undo the president’s signature legislative achievement.

“We’re going to continue to do everything we can to repeal the president’s failed health care law,” said House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio. “The law is a train wreck.”

“We aim to put a stop to Obamacare before it costs one more job or raises a family’s out-of-pocket expenses one more dollar,” said House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, R-Virginia.

The House bill, which would keep the government running through mid-December, also locks in overall funding levels at $986 billion, preserving Washington’s so-called “sequester” — forced across-the-board spending cuts that have been criticized by leaders on both sides of the aisle.

Obama: ‘Raising the Debt Ceiling…Does Not Increase Our Debt

Comments Off on Obama: ‘Raising the Debt Ceiling…Does Not Increase Our Debt

Amazing for the President to say this. Why does he think we have to raise the debt ceiling? Because we’ve spent over budget that’s why, so it has to be raised.

Raising the debt ceiling doesn’t increase the nation’s debt, Pres. Obama declared in a speech today.

In a speech at the Business Roundtable headquarters in Washington, D.C., Obama dismissed concerns about raising the debt ceiling by noting that it’d been done so many times in the past:

“Now, this debt ceiling — I just want to remind people in case you haven’t been keeping up – raising the debt ceiling, which has been done over a hundred times, does not increase our debt; it does not somehow promote profligacy.  All it does is it says you got to pay the bills that you’ve already racked up, Congress.  It’s a basic function of making sure that the full faith and credit of the United States is preserved.”

Obama went on to suggest that “the average person” mistakenly thinks that raising the debt ceiling means the U.S. is racking up more debt:

“It’s always a tough vote because the average person thinks raising the debt ceiling must mean that we’re running up our debt, so people don’t like to vote on it, and, typically, there’s some gamesmanship in terms of making the President’s party shoulder the burden of raising the — taking the vote.”

But, isn’t the fact that the U.S. has hit its debt ceiling “over a hundred times” – and, thus, has had to keep raising it – proof that raising the limit does, in fact, lead to increased debt?

How The U.S. Military Plans To Hijack The Airwaves

Comments Off on How The U.S. Military Plans To Hijack The Airwaves

If you want to take over a nation, then first take over its airwaves. Broadcast your messages and interdict the enemy’s ability to broadcast theirs. When the U.S. attacked Iraq in 1991, or NATO bombed Serbia in 1999, among the first targets destroyed were TV and radio stations. When there is a military coup in Africa, the first buildings the rebels usually grab are the radio and TV studios.

Some might wonder whether this technology can be used inside the United States. The answer is yes. “The requirements outlined for this technology are specific to conduct operations overseas,” Cohen says. “However, in some instances and when directed, the MISO forces and equipment can be used during Civil Authority Information Support operations.

So it is illuminating that the United States Special Operations Command (USSOCOM), the organization that oversees America’s elite special forces, is quietly searching for equipment that will effectively give it control over every FM and AM radio station in an area. The short, innocuous-sounding announcement on the Federal Business Opportunities site states that SOCOM seeks vendors to provide “a radio broadcast system capable of searching for and acquiring every AM and FM radio station in a specific area and then broadcasting a message(s) in the target area on all acquired AM and FM radio station frequencies.” SOCOM wants equipment that is both lightweight and sophisticated enough to detect and broadcast over multiple frequencies simultaneously. And SOCOM wants it fast. The equipment must be at least Technology Readiness Level 8, a Pentagon measure of technological maturity that means that it is fully developed, tested and ready for use.

“It appears that SOCOM is looking to purchase a preferably commercial off the shelf friendly-foreign or domestic advanced form of Software-Defined Radio (SDR) as a solution for their tactical and theater Psyops or MISO missions,” says a military expert who asked to remain anonymous. “The exact platform – whether it’s ground-based or airborne – cannot be determined from the solicitation. It would appear to be an urgent request because of the TRL 8 or above stipulation. ”
