Seems like this Imam is starting to threaten the US if it doesn’t acquiesce to Islam……Now we will have a Muslim backlash and Terrorist attacks if the mosque is not built? But Islam is a peaceful religion?

New York imam says moving mosque could incite Muslim backlash

If planned centre is moved from site near Ground Zero, radicals could see Islam as under attack in US, says cleric

The imam behind the controversial plan to build an Islamic centre and mosque near New York‘s Ground Zero site has said he is “exploring all options” and “everything is on the table”, in the face of a firestorm of politically driven protest against the project.

In a speech to the Council on Foreign Relations in New York today, Feisal Abdul Rauf expressed frustration that “radical extremists have hijacked our discourse”, and warned that moving the mosque could prompt a violent backlash from some Muslims abroad.

Rauf said the Islamic centre’s advisers had been looking at “every option” including delaying construction. The imam has also suggested that the centre could expand to provide space for people of other faiths alongside Muslims.

“Everything is on the table,” he said. “We really are focused on solving it … I give you my pledge.”

Rauf said it was “absolutely disingenuous” to suggest that the site of the planned construction was “hallowed ground” when there is a strip club and betting shops nearby. He defended the need for the project.

“In recent days some people have asked: is there really a need for an Islamic community centre in lower Manhattan? Is it worth all this firestorm? The answer is a categorical yes,” he said.

Yesterday, Rauf told ABC News that the controversy had “been used for political purposes” and that there was “growing Islamophobia in this country”. He said the “discourse has been, to a certain extent, hijacked by the radicals.”

“The radicals on both sides, the radicals in the United States and the radicals in the Muslim world, feed off each other. And to a certain extent, the attention that they’ve been able to get by the media has even aggravated the problem,” he said.

Asked why, when more than two-thirds of New Yorkers say they want the Islamic centre built somewhere else, he would not do that, Rauf said: “My major concern with moving it is that the headline in the Muslim world will be Islam is under attack in America, this will strengthen the radicals in the Muslim world, help their recruitment, this will put our people – our soldiers, our troops, our embassies, our citizens – under attack in the Muslim world, and we have expanded and given and fueled terrorism.”

Rauf said he might have done some things differently if he had realised the Islamic centre would provoke the reaction that has engulfed it. “I would never have done it. I’m a man of peace. I mean the whole objective of peace work is not to do something that would provoke controversy,” he said.

This is a 1st I have ever heard of this! Ground Zero Mosque Imam: America is “Sharia Compliant State” – CSPAN Dateline: Washington DC In a 2004 lecture on his book on Book TV entitled,  “What is Right With Islam”…..Feisal Abdul Rauf

Just listen to his twisted logic comparing the Constitution with a 7th century jurist statement comparing it to Sharia Law and notice how the people in the audience when he says this is how “American is Sharia compliant” start laughing…………..I bet most of those people aren’t laughing now.

Ground Zero Mosque Backers Won’t Rule Out Taking Funds from Saudi Arabia, Iran

Notice how these PC media people have already took the words ‘Ground Zero Mosque’ out of the title of the article below. Attempting to smooth things over.

Islamic Center Backers Won’t Rule Out Taking Funds from Saudi Arabia, Iran

The developers behind the (Mosque) Islamic center planned for a site near Ground Zero won’t rule out accepting financing from the Mideast — including from Saudi Arabia and Iran — as they begin searching for $100 million needed to build the project.

The religious organization and the development company behind the center declined to say how much of the $100 million needed to build the facility has already been raised.

“We are in the planning stages,” said Oz Sultan, spokesman for the center now called Park51. “We have just started the process of fundraising planning.”

Sultan said it would take three to six months to establish a plan on how to raise the needed capital. He said any fundraising campaign would begin domestically, but he would not comment on whether it would extend overseas or to foreign governments.

“We’ll look at all available options within the United States to start. We’re hoping to fund this predominately from domestic donors. That can be everything from institutions all the way down to personal [contributors,]” said Sultan.

When asked if they would then turn to foreign donors, Sultan replied, “I can’t comment on that.”

Pressed on whether the developers were willilng rule out accepting donations from the governments of Saudi Arabia or Iran, he repeated, “I can’t comment on that.”

//

The center, in the works for over a year, has become a nationwide controversy as the anniversary of 9/11 approaches. Critics charge that having what they call a mosque so close what they consider hallowed ground is insensitive and an insult to the victims’ families, especially since the attack was perpetrated in the name of Islam. (It certainly is and that’s the main problem. It’s not a 1st amendment problem, it’s the lack of sensitivity and respect for what happened on 9/11)

Fifteen of the 19 terrorists were Saudi Arabian and funding from that country could further anger those already opposed to the mosque. Many mosques in the U.S. have been funded in part with Saudi money.

Iran has been designated a sponsor of terrorism by the U.S. government.

AP Orders Staff: ‘Stop Using the Phrase “Ground Zero Mosque”

More political correctness to play down the Cordoba Initiative by ground zero, except this time by a large News Agency. Yes the muslims are already practicing their religion near ‘ground zero’ since 2009, but they don’t have to build a monument to it there, that’s 13 stories tall. And what about this: Mosque Moves Forward, Yet Church in Limbo

AP Orders Staff: ‘Stop Using the Phrase “Ground Zero Mosque”

In an unusual move, the Associated Press has publicly released an advisory memo to its reporters on how to cover of the Ground Zero mosque story – and the first rule is that journalists must immediately stop calling it the “Ground Zero mosque” story.

“We should continue to avoid the phrase ‘Ground zero mosque’ or ‘mosque at ground zero’ on all platforms,” reads the advisory, which was issued by the AP’s Standards Center.

Instead of the “Ground Zero mosque,” AP recommends that reporters use the terms “mosque 2 blocks from WTC site,” “Muslim (or Islamic) center near WTC site,” “mosque near ground zero,” or “mosque near WTC site.”

The AP suggests that it might “useful in some stories to note that Muslim prayer services have been held since 2009 in the building that the new project will replace.” In addition, the news service offers a “succinct summary of President Obama’s position” on the mosque, but doesn’t include the positions of any other politicians.

AP is arguable the most influential news organization in the country, and many media outlets adhere to its guidelines in their reporting.

Nancy Pelosi wants investigation into Ground Zero mosque opposition funding

Well you know you just can’t make this stuff up. Nancy, have you forgot who caused 9/11, the 1993 Twin Towers bombing, the bombing of the US Cole, etc? Sure all muslims aren’t terrorists, but so far in all these examples above, all terrorists have been muslims. Nancy can’t figure out where all the opposition is coming from….can you spell OUT OF TOUCH.

Nancy Pelosi, house speaker, wants investigation into Ground Zero mosque opposition funding

Nancy Pelosi wants some answers.

The house speaker is calling for an investigation into groups protesting the building of the Ground Zero mosque.

“There is a concerted effort to make this a political issue by some,” she told San Francisco‘s KCBS radio on Tuesday.

Pelosi added that she joins “those who have called for looking into how is this opposition to the mosque being funded.”

Many Republicans have said they are against the building of the mosque, and have demanded Democratic candidates and incumbents to publicly choose a side.

The GOP said it will keep hammering the issue in a drive to take back Congress.

“It’s important to voters right now,” Tory Mazzola, spokesman for the National Congressional Republican Committee, said.

Pelosi is one of few House Democrats to make a statement on the mosque. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) broke from the president on Monday and said the mosque should be built “someplace else.” The move occurred shortly after his Republican opponent Sharron Angle asked where he stood.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg has previously said an investigation into how the $100 million project is funded would be “un-American.” (Really, maybe Saudi Arabia is funding it…..we need to know…$100 million?)

Pelosi said the matter is a “zoning issue” in New York City and would like the matter to be determined by city residents. She said the issue might be “ginned up” in order to help Republican candidates.

“In New York, I’m sure the New Yorkers would like to make their own urban development decision themselves,” Pelosi said.

Here’s more proof the PC crowd are bending over backwards for the Muslim Ground Zero mosque, but not for other religions. I’ll have to add, that I have no issue with muslims, I have issue with this group using the name Cordoba Initiative, knowing what that means, saying will be sharia law compliant, not releasing their financial funding sources, and opening this center 0n 9/11/2011.

Mosque Moves Forward, Yet Church in Limbo

The battle raging over the Ground Zero mosque is bringing new attention to another, less publicized controversy involving a house of worship in Lower Manhattan.

St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, which once sat right across the street from the World Trade Center, was crushed under the weight of the collapse of Tower Two on September 11, 2001. St. Nicholas was the only church to be lost in the attacks, and nine years later, while City of New York officials are busy removing every impediment to the building of the Cordoba mosque two blocks from the site, St. Nicholas’ future remains unclear.

The last bit of hopeful news for St. Nicholas came two years ago, in July 2008, when church officials and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey announced a deal which would have allowed the church to be rebuilt about two blocks from its original location.

The Port Authority agreed to give the church a parcel of land at Liberty and Greenwich Streets, and contribute $20 million toward construction of a new sanctuary. The Port Authority also agreed to build an explosion-proof platform and foundation for the new church building, which would sit on top of a screening area for cars and trucks entering the underground garages at the new World Trade Center.

//

Trouble emerged after St. Nicholas announced its plans to build a traditional Greek Orthodox church building, 24,000 square feet in size, topped with a grand dome. Port Authority officials told the church to cut back the size of the building and the height of the proposed dome, limiting it to rising no higher than the World Trade Center memorial. The deal fell apart for goodin March 2009, when the Port Authority abruptly ended the talks after refusing to allow church officials to review plans for the garage and screening area underneath. Sixteen months later, the two sides have still not met to resume negotiations.

St. Nicholas Church’s difficulty in getting approvals to rebuild stands in stark contrast to the treatment that the developers of the proposed Cordoba mosque have received. New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg, state Atty. Gen. Andrew Cuomo, and a raft of city officials have all come out publicly in favor of building the mosque, and the city’s Landmarks and Preservation Commission recently voted unanimously to deny protection to the building currently occupying the site where the mosque is to be built.

The mosque is proposed to rise 13 stories, far above the height of the World Trade Center memorial, with no height restrictions imposed.

Inspired by former representative Vito Fossella (R-NY), Human Events and RedState.com are sponsoring an online petition calling on New York officials to take action to stop the mosque from being built.

The contrast has not been lost on at least one candidate for Congress. George Demos is a Republican running in New York’s 1st Congressional District. Demos has made the Cordoba mosque an issue in his campaign, even though his district is on Eastern Long Island, and is highlighting the plight of St. Nicholas Church.

In an exclusive interview with Human Events, Demos had harsh words for the Port Authority, which he accuses of blocking the church from being rebuilt. “The Port Authority is a creation of Congress and should be answerable to two states [New York and New Jersey], but in reality is answerable to no one,” Demos said. “The Port Authority is insular and simply doesn’t care about public opinion. They are simply not making this a priority. Chris Ward is the Port Authority director and he is not allowing this to go forward.”

For its part, the Port Authority says it had no choice but to break off negotiations with the church to avoid delaying the World Trade Center project any longer. The authority said that the church retains the right to rebuild on its own at its original location. “We made an extraordinarily generous offer to resolve this issue and spent eight months trying to finalize that offer, and the church wanted even more on top of that,” Stephen Sigmund, a spokesman for the Port Authority said last year. “They have now given us no choice but to move on to ensure the site is not delayed. The church continues to have the right to rebuild at their original site, and we will pay fair market value for the underground space beneath that building.”

Demos said it is the church that has been unjustly delayed. “One place of worship was destroyed in the attacks. That should be the first thing on that board’s agenda. That should be the first priority,” he said. “There were actually relics of St. Nicholas in that church that were lost in the attacks. Why is it that the same government officials who are so ferverently fighting for the mosque’s right to be built aren’t also fighting for the church to be rebuilt.

Demos was critical of Mayor Bloomberg’s recent comments on the occasion of the Landmarks Commission vote. In a speech immediately following the vote, Bloomberg said, among other arguments, that allowing the mosque project to go forward would be a victory of sorts over the forces that attacked America on 9/11.

“Let us not forget that Muslims were among those murdered on 9/11, and that our Muslim neighbors grieved with us as New Yorkers and as Americans,” Bloomberg said. “We would betray our values and play into our enemies’ hands if we were to treat Muslims differently than anyone else. In fact, to cave to popular sentiment would be to hand a victory to the terrorists, and we should not stand for that.”

Demos called those remarks “premature” and echoed New York Republican gubernatorial candidate Rick Lazio’s call for an investigation into the funding of the mosque. “We need to investigate sources of funding for the mosque. If in fact it is being funded by terrorist regimes, then it is the terrorists who are winning by building a mosque at Ground Zero,” Demos said. “Bloomberg’s comments only beg the question of why aren’t we investigating?”

Demos calls his district, currently represented by four-term Democrat Tim Bishop, a bellwether for Republicans in the fall elections. The district is a traditionally Republican seat, which President Obama narrowly won with 51% of the vote in 2008.
While Demos is focusing his campaign on the issues of jobs, government spending, and his opponent’s voting record—which he characterized as out of step with the district—he said that the plight of St. Nicholas Church is resonating with voters.

Recent polling in New York shows that a majority disagrees with the plan to build the mosque so close to Ground Zero.
Asked what prompted him to take up St. Nicholas’s cause, Demos said the apparent favorable treatment the mosque’s developers received served to illuminate the issue to him as simply a question of right versus wrong.

“This is not a partisan issue,” he said. “It’s an issue of fair-minded candidates for office stepping up and doing the right thing. The focus should be something we can all agree on—getting the church rebuilt.”

BREAKING: Muslim Leaders Decide Against Ground Zero Mosque

Comments Off on BREAKING: Muslim Leaders Decide Against Ground Zero Mosque

Well maybe, just maybe and then again maybe not, have the NYC muslim leaders have come to their senses finally…The (Park 51 leaders) are denying this right now, but we’ll see how it goes.

CNN Poll: Nearly 70% Of Americans Oppose NYC Mosque Plan

A new CNN/Opinion Research Corporation poll shows an overwhelming majority of people nationwide are against the Cordoba House/Park51 mosque and Islamic cultural center proposed for construction near Ground Zero:
According to the new survey out Wednesday, nearly 70 percent of all Americans oppose the controversial plan to build the mosque just blocks away from the solemn site in lower Manhattan while just 29 percent favor the construction.

BREAKING: Muslim Leaders Decide Against Ground Zero Mosque

Or so says Haaretz:

After weeks of heated debate over plans for an Islamic community center near Ground Zero – the site of the 9/11 attacks on New York – it seems Muslim leaders will soon back down, agreeing to move to a new site.

The decision follows a high-profile campaign against the project that included advertisements on New York buses showing images of the burning Twin Towers, an iconic landmark razed when al-Qaida terrorists flew packed passenger planes into them in 2001. The New York Republican party is also said to be planning a hostile television campaign.

Sources in New York said on Monday that Muslim religious and business leaders will announce plans to abandon the project in the next few days.

New York Governor David Patterson said last weekend that Muslim leaders had rejected outright his proposal to swap the site in for another in Manhattan.

But several people familiar with the debate among New York’s Islamic activists now claim that the leaders are convinced abandoning the site is preferable to unleashing a wave of bitterness towards Muslims.

UPDATE: Maggie Haberman at POLITICO is saying the mosque developer is denying the move. We’ll see.

UPDATE 2: Maybe not. This from Park51’s (the builder of the mosque): “There is no truth to the Haaretz story. It is wholly incorrect. We will be publishing a press release regarding this shortly.”

So is this a win we could put in our column? In a word, yes – but don’t think this issue is dead.

I’ve said all along that I’m not concerned if the owners of the mosque-to-be had the right to build near Ground Zero. My concerns lie in the fact that they think it is right to do so. We cannot be naive and believe that those behind the plans for the Ground Zero mosque (many with radical ties) didn’t know how we would react to the news of their intentions. They knew conservatives and many moderates would come out against it, and as such liberals would come out in support, label us bigots and portray us as small-minded. They are playing us against ourselves.

And now that the conservative stance on the mosque has “won” they will do the same. They’ve decided in the face of opposition to fold. But now they have another card in their hand: the victim card. They’ll play it and portray us as people against freedom of religion. It’s up to us not to let them get away with it.
